We all know that diamonds are a girl’s best friend, but even if your gorgeous round, emerald or princess-cut engagement ring used to have people reaching for their sunglasses, over time the brightness tends to fade as dirt and other grime builds up. While you may just think you can drop your diamonds into a jeweler to polish them, they need a little more TLC than that to keep their shine. Here are a few things you can do at home to help your diamond sparkle as if it were brand-new.

Dipping in Detergent

One good way to remove grease, smudges, oils, dirt, and other issues that can dull your sparkles, is to fill a small bowl with warm water and a mild liquid soap. Before you create the mixture, make sure the soap does not contain chlorine, as it can damage your stone and setting.

Once you’ve made sure the soap is safe, you can drop your ring into the mixture and let it soak for a couple of minutes. Next, use a soft brush to lather up the ring. Once it’s shining again, put it in a plastic or metal strainer and rinse it under warm water. Remember to place a stopper in the drain just in case you drop your ring. Once your ring is clean, leave in on a soft cloth to dry.

Over-the-Counter Jewellery Cleaners

While the best solution may be to clean your rings with mild detergent, there are a few jewelry cleaners that can do the trick, too. The trick is to select a good cleaner by figuring out what your diamond is set in, such as rose gold or platinum. Then, check the labels of the jewelry cleaners to ensure they are safe for your diamonds. Trustworthy jewellers in Brisbane like Ringleaders can help you.

Once you have chosen the right cleaner, make sure they follow the directions for the best results. Don’t be tempted to pull your ring out as soon as it is clean, and try to avoid touching a clean diamond with your fingers. Remember that our human hands are full of oils that will smudge your clean stone.

Other Home Cleaning Remedies

While the above options can help you to get the grime out of your diamond, there are other ways that can get them sparkling once more. One particularly good option could be found in your medicine cabinet.

By dropping your dull stones into a glass of water mixed with an Alka-Seltzer tablet, you can restore the shine. All you have to do is let the diamonds sit in the mixture for a few minutes and then take them out and allow them to air dry.

Another fabulous way to add the life back to your diamonds is to buy plain club soda and place your stones into a full glass of the soda, leaving them to soak overnight.

Another good idea is to buy a couple of denture tablets to keep around the house. They can also improve the sparkle and glow of your beloved diamond jewelry. All you have to do is drop a tablet into a tall glass of water and add your diamonds, leaving them to sit for a few minutes before removing and leaving to air dry.

Take note of all these tips and ensure that your diamond jewelry always shines.
